Twickenham CC held a very successful Bike Fest in Old Deer Park on Sunday 19th June, with over 30 youngsters signing up to have a go at bike racing and to see how well they fared on the skills course. Everyone had a great afternoon and even the Mums 'n' Dads had a go! A hugely popular activity was the 50m sprint lane with adults and youngsters alike looking to beat the clock over the distance. Bike Doctor was kept busy all afternoon helping people with minor problems and giving free safety checks and dispensing tips on good maintenance.
On the race track the Strictly Cycling Schools Challenge was a fiercely contested event with youngsters from Orleans Park School , Waldegrave School and Teddington School taking part and Orleans Park School eventually winning through and lifting the Strictly Cycling Trophy for 2011. In the British Cycling Regional Grass Track Championships racing was fast and furious and spectators were treated to some tight competition as riders competed in four events for a first prize of 100 guineas (£105 pounds). The winner was Tom Bell of Twickenham CC who said he had “thoroughly enjoyed the racing, although it had been hard against such a strong wind!”
The official event photographer was David Rowe and the full set of photographs and his excellent blog can be found at www.davidrowephotography.co.uk
Bike Fest is part of the Strictly Cycling programme of cycling activities being promoted in partnership with Richmond Council to schools and the community to encourage people of all ages to get on their bikes and have a go.
