Sandy King picked up 6th place in the Elite Men's race on Sunday
Report from Wiesia Kuczaj:-
Twickenham ladies team travelled up to Oakley on Saturday for the 5th leg of the Womens Team Series.
We had 7 girls entered for the race but due to illness had only 4 starters on the day, 3 of which who also were recovering from illness.
The course was pretty flat but the road surface was rather dodgy, there were also some pretty sharp corners to contend with. This meant that the race was slower than normal and the main bunch managed to stay together.
All was going swimingly with Holly, Alex and Jodie all in contention of placing until about 1 mile from the finish when everything went pear shaped.
The first incident was caused by one of the girls saddle flying off of her bike on a corner, amazingly no one came down and apparently one girl even managed to ride over the saddle which is rather impressive.
Shortly after that another girl in the pack got a puncture taking out a couple of girls either side of her, Jodie was just behind her so had to apply her brakes in doing so she got bumped in the back by another rider and sent straight over her handle bars.
Holly also was knocked off but not in such a spectacular fashion and managed to get back on her bike and finish. Alex luckily was positioned just in front of the crash and came through to finish 6th (fantastic result considering she had her wisdom teeth out during the week and wasn't even planning to race).
Jodie hit the ground pretty hard resulting in a broken teeth and some rather nasty cuts on her face. The first aid guys attending to her on the road side and then took her to the local hospital to be examined. She had to spend the last 2 days in and out of casualty waiting for various xrays and stitches.
I spoke with her this evening and she has been given the all-clear on bone breakages and is off to the dentist tomorrow to get her teeth fixed.
Despite the14 stitches in
her chin and broken teeth she seems in good spirits and has said that
she would like to race for Twickenham again which is great news.
The overall results came through last night and we are still placed 4th
which is fantastic considering we only had 3 finishers.
Well Done to Vince Leon for picking up 4th place on Tuesday night in the 4th Cat race. Vince now only requires a solitary point to achieve his 3rd Cat license.
Cancelled due to waterlogged pitch.
Good Luck to the riders heading off to 'forrin' terrain for this coming weekends epic sportives. Apart from our Etape riders battling the infamous "Giant of Provence" - Mount Ventoux - we also have a 10-up squadra representing Team Twickenham at the Granfondo Pinarello.
