Circuit Race Championship - Hillingdon - 09/10/10

Well Saturday turned out to be a great day for racing, warm and dry, although without the promised sunshine, and our band of expectant enthusiastic members turned up at Hillingdon Cycle Circuit to do battle for the annual club circuit championships. Having settled the debate over clockwise or anti-clockwise our eminent Chairman decreed that the race would be run clockwise and twenty riders lined up at the start.

After five laps the race proper began and whilst 45 minutes plus 5 laps might not seem like much to those seasoned performers amongst you, for those who were hanging on in the bunch it must have seemed endless! For much of the first half of the race the riders stayed together at a very respectable pace with some of the more senior riders having a few digs at the front. As we moved into the second half of the race this began to tell with small groups of two and three riders forming off the back of the main bunch. A few times the bunch strung out as riders tried to make a break, but none were successful until with three laps remaining Andy Betts went off the front and despite valiant efforts to bring him back his race experience and fitness enabled him to stay away to take the race in fine style. The bunch swept up the final straight and in the sprint for the line Steve Home just pipped Iain Palmer with Stephen Campbell, Mark Spindler, Natalie Cresswick and Matt Dykiert all contesting the places with George Kirkin and Matt Treadwell just behind.
