Race Report: TCC Win Vets E1234 Race 4!
Myself and Graham Crow are representing TCC, with a strong team from Handsling and another from Quest for a one hour plus 5 laps thrash in good but cool conditions at Hillingdon this evening.
First lap is pedestrian and Graham attacks. And attacks… Very strong riding. I block a few times and there is assistance from Handsling, but the peloton are in a chasing mood. There are waves of attacks throughout the race, with a few starting to stick. I’m blocking as best I can; look fast, ride slow, but you can feel the restlessness as a couple of riders shout from the rear and launch their attacks.
About six to go and a break of four including Graham is away and it is sticking. Another selection with Quest blocking and I’m in a second group of six working together to draw clear air from the bunch. We manage to stay away with through and off, and I’m working too hard, but again the chase from the main bunch is back on.
One of the lead four is a winner already (Over 50’s) but is also working for the group. Last lap and Graham attacks from the back bends and just holds off the other two for first! Meanwhile, I grab Vince Halpern’s wheel (ex TCC and winner of the Imperial Winter Series) for the final lap. He’s a sprinter, so it’s more for me to watch the expert than compete, per se, but I wind up for the sprint up the back straight, avoid being boxed in and pass a rider. Tenth in the 40-50’s race. Very pleased. Another point
Well done Graham , it was a pleasure to race with you this evening, after all that hard work, you really deserved the win!
